"Those who? Those Tar Heels, the North Carolina men’s basketball NCAA championship winners. You know, the college team that could give the Wizards a run for their money. Well, congratulations to those Tar Heels, but I’m interested in another type of tar heel.... "
"Getting to know your neighbors is usually a good thing, but listening to them through your walls when you are trying to sleep is not something you really want to deal with. Many of us at one point in our lives have experienced residual noise from the neighboring row house or apartment. Well, there is a relatively inexpensive solution... "
"Recently, my wife, Carolyn, and I decided to undertake an enormous project and invest in my company, Superior Home Services, Inc., as well as in our future. We purchased a 7,500-square-foot lot, with a somewhat outdated and considerably rundown house in the Wesley Heights section of northwest Washington, D.C. We had been looking for an opportunity to create and build a builder’s showcase house for some time. So when the “Klingle Street” project presented itself, we jumped at the chance and were fortunate enough ... "
"With all the doom and gloom reports, it seems difficult to maintain a positive outlook on the economy. Current indicators have cast a shadow across the economic spectrum. Consumer confidence is low, job growth is falling, the price of oil is still hovering around $100 per barrel, the stock market is experiencing instability, unemployment is up and the national housing market is in disarray. In spite of these facts there is a silver lining when it comes to the remodeling industry ... "
"Recently, I had the opportunity to build a new custom home for my wife and me in the Wesley Heights section of Washington DC. The moment we set eyes on the property, I knew we were in for a challenging, large scale renovation or the possibility of a complete rebuild. We fell in love with the lot, the neighborhood and especially, the enormous American Beech Tree that graced the front corner of the property. Though building a new house has its inherent challenges... "
Superior Home Services, Inc., wins Washington Space Outstanding Contemporary Kitchen Award.
"Hosted by Daniel Steinkoler of Superior Home Services, Inc., and this newspaper's publisher, Sonya Bernhardt, the fifth annual "Living in Pink" fundraiser brought a lively crowd to the stylish Klingle Street residence of the Steinkoler's on October 30, 2008."
"Cancer survivor Michele Conley -- founder of "Living in Pink," which contributes to breast cancer research -- greeted the arrivals and made sure everyone got to sample the food, from sushi to cupcakes. The best raffle item was a Vespa. Manya Steinkoler, a professor and sister of Daniel, had the winning number but declined and asked for another drawing. Interior designer Cyndy Alsaif won the scooter. Now, that's classy."
"We are always amazed by the caliber of talent in DC’s design and building community, but it was on full display last week when more than 100 people in the trade gathered at the home of Daniel and Carolyn Steinkoler (which was featured in our fall issue) to celebrate the winners of Washington Spaces’ 2008 design competitions for... "
"Replacing windows in old Georgetown homes has always been a challenging endeavor for homeowners as well as for builders and remodelers. As a builder and remodeler, I have often cringed when the architect we are working with attempts to explain to our clients that we will not be allowed to replace their seemingly outdated... "
"Twenty years ago I started in the painting and plastering business. Small paint and plaster repair jobs led to larger jobs, which eventually led me down the path to becoming a custom builder and high end remodeler. Learning the painting and plaster trade in a high end market such as Georgetown required an understanding of the exact methods and materials used by... "
"When Daniel and Carolyn Steinkoler set out to remodel the Wesley Heights home they’d purchased in October 2006, they discovered major structural problems. The foundation slab wasn’t thick enough to support the structure and the soil was soft. Termite and water damage exacerbated conditions. Before long, they realized they’d have to virtually build a new house ... "
"Dear Contractor’s Corner, Last week you wrote about the importance of hiring a licensed and insured contractor and why a building permit is required when planning any construction project. However, I am still struggling to figure out what to do with my kitchen and bath, let alone hiring someone to do it! Do you have any advice on how to put all of my ideas together cohesively... "
"Dear contractor’s corner, I am thinking about remodeling my kitchen. I have found a designer and a builder. However, I am concerned that the builder does not want to get a building permit. He says I don’t need one and that DC is a hassle. Is this true? Should I have a building permit for a kitchen remodel, and what would happen... "
